This video is displayed in the “Taranaki Naturally” exhibition at Puke Ariki museum in New Plymouth. It shows the amazing development of our iconic mountain, Mt Taranaki.

Waiteka Road Quarry – lahar mound formations

The mounds in front of Mt Taranaki are the remains of a huge landslide that occurred about 23,000 years ago when a large volcanic cone collapsed and spread debris over a huge area.

Whenuku Road Quarry – Info on deposit

The Whenuku Road Quarry is 7km inland from the coast and established on an alluvial terrace. The terrace is underlain by the andesite being quarried. As the land rises from the coast, the surface landscape is underlain by bedded marine sand, conglomerate, peat and clay. The andesite material lies below a 2m cover of topsoil, clay and ash soils.

The resources comprise of andesite sands, rounded gravel and large boulders in a matrix of fine grain sands.
